Tablets
Thousands of clay or stone tablets have been found in Mesopotamia, most often containing cuneiform language (developed around 3500-3000 B.C), often baked in ancient fires. They have even been found to fill whole libraries! Tablets were most commonly used to keep records and official documents, but also used for school exercises, poems and hymns, and scientific texts. Seals Cylindrical seals with inscriptions were used to sign letters (with a personal sign), mark jars (to provide information on the contents), and over doors to protect valuables. Spoken Spoken language was of course used, and written language (on tablets, letters, etc.) began to relate to spoken language around 2500 B.C. |
